On Tuesday, Chief Minister Sukhu of Himachal Pradesh addressed the assembly, stating that illegal mining is thriving under the protection of certain public representatives. He emphasized that stringent actions will be taken against these individuals, regardless of their influence.
During the session, Sukhu referenced a raid conducted at a stone crusher site owned by Praveen Sharma, a close relative of BJP MLA Ashish Sharma from Hamirpur. This discussion arose in response to a question posed by Congress MLA Ranjit Singh during the zero hour.
The police confirmed that the raid was part of a crackdown on illegal mining activities, while the BJP legislator claimed it was a retaliatory action against him. Sukhu informed the assembly that the stone crusher in the Sujanpur area of Hamirpur district had been officially shut down since July 2024, yet it was still operational, continuing illegal mining operations.
During the raid, authorities seized several excavation machines, a mixer machine, and 50 vehicles loaded with stones.
